Gaëlle Vallée-Tourangeau Presents at EGPROC 2026

Gaëlle Vallée-Tourangeau presented “Tracking Emotion in Motion: A Process-tracing Approach to Facial Expression Data During Narrative Film Viewing” at EGPROC 2026, the European Group of Process Tracing Studies conference, held 15-17 July 2026 at the University of Warwick.

The talk was given on 16 July, in Session 4. It asked whether automated facial coding can serve as a process-tracing record of affective dynamics over time, comparable to mouse- or eye-tracking for choice, extending process-tracing methods beyond the static, post-hoc self-report measures typically used to capture emotion in judgment and decision-making research.

Using FaceReader’s continuous valence measure and growth curve analysis of 117 participants who watched either a narrative film or a static informational video, the analysis found that emotional trajectories differed significantly by condition, with the difference concentrated in the film’s resolution phase after its narrative pivot.
