Two pre-registered studies find that moral obligation and autonomous motivation independently predict lower reactance and higher vaccination intentions, but messages highlighting moral obligation with controlling language backfire, increasing reactance in hesitant individuals compared to autonomy-supportive, personal-protection framing.
